Diamond Mouth Surprise and the Waters of Forgetfulness:
Diamond Mouth still remembers the traditional smell of cities…Many people have lost the ability to imagine the geographic variety that once could be perceived by the nose. Diamond Mouth Surprise is in the pipes.
The old perfumes had been part of a toilette when the word toilette carried no connotations of water. The old perfumes were isolated by Diamond Mouth Surprise directly from the colors drained of rocks by the waters that dripped from them.
All pilgrims cross the same funeral landscape on their way to the beyond, and the mythical hydrology on that route is the same: at the end of their journey they reach a body of water where the dead are detached from the deeds that survive them. These deeds are written into a book of lichen before they become the universe.
Following dream waters upstream to the present day, Diamond Mouth Surprise learns that the H20 gurgling through the city’s plumbing is not water, but a stuff which industrial society makes. Diamond Mouth Surprise fears that contact with such liquid might make the souls of the city’s children impermeable to the water of dreams.
The creatures of the water: its fish, its shrimp, its corals, the birds and snakes that feed off them, are the agents of dreams. This is why they are disappearing. One by one they are being reclaimed by the nebulae.

ROBERTO CARLOS LANGE is a composer and sound artist born in South Florida and is the son of Ecuadorean immigrants. Growing up he was surrounded by tropical heat and hurricanes that represented the rich colors of sound and people living in South Florida. The sound of bass and late-night “peñas” in and around his house carved a deep foundation into his interest for sound and the things producing them.
Roberto records and performs as HELADO NEGRO and OMBRE, a collaboration with Juliannia Barwick.
For the July edition of Diamond Mouth Surprise, Roberto will be screening a series of recently completed videos pieces.
